Field Operations Division
The Field Operations Division, commanded by Captain Joe Dixon, is the uniformed and most publicly visible part of the department. Its commissioned officers, uniformed guards and communications operators work together to carry out all tactical functions.
From the University Police Building, 2 shifts deploy daily covering the campus with 24-hour protection and service. The duties they perform are as diverse as the community they serve: from arresting felony violators to unlocking cars to performing lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Within a setting which demands special sensitivity to the goals of higher education, the protection of life and property are continually accomplished through enforcement of N.C. state laws and UNCG regulations.
Round the clock patrol requires 24 hour support by police dispatchers and telephone operators. Each shift has 1 primary telecommunications operator. Telecommunications operators are the first responders to most calls, from requests for assistance in entering offices and vehicles to reports of crimes in progress. In order to competently send uniformed units to the scene, telecommunications operators must know a great deal of information and know how to immediately access a great deal more. They then must use this information calmly, quickly and accurately. The lives of both officers and innocent civilians may depend on their preparedness and professionalism.
In police work, training is everything. The power to arrest demands a working familiarity with a constantly changing set of laws, procedures, tools and techniques. Continuous training is accomplished through specialized schools, the North Carolina Police Academy, in-service training, other law enforcement agencies, and private companies.
