In April of 2003, Public Safety Directors of The University of North Carolina System, met and established The University of North Carolina System Honor Guard. If an officer has made his wishes known to a family member or the family requests, The University of the North Carolina System has an absolute and solemn obligation, not just as exemplary institutions and professional police officers, but also as honorable human beings to do everything within their power to honor such a request with absolute dignity, honor, and professionalism. There is perhaps no greater final honor that can be paid to a police officer and the family than having the officer's body laid to rest by fellow police officers that have also walked the path of duty, honor, and service. It is a final tribute for a job well done and the sacrifices the officer and his or her family have made serving the citizens of North Carolina. The Honor Guard is further tasked with performing at special events and funerals deemed appropriate and deserving of honor, by the Chancellor or the President of the UNC System or the Chiefs of Public Safety at the respective universities. |
